osxdailynews.blogspot.com ® iOS 7.0.6 Released with Security Fix for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

iOS 7.0.6

Apple has released a small update for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, versioned as iOS 7.0.6 with a build number of 11b651. The security update notably includes a fix for SSL connection verification and weighs in between 13MB and 36MB, depending on the iOS device being installed upon.

The initial release notes bundled with the iOS 7.0.6 update are very brief, stating simply “This security update provides a fix for SSL connection verification.” Apple elaborates a bit further on their knowledge base article, providing the following details for what the update resolves:

"Impact: An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS

Description: Secure Transport failed to validate the authenticity of the connection. This issue was addressed by restoring missing validation steps."

It is possible some other minor bug and security fixes are included in the release, though due to the small size of the download users should not expect much.

Downloading iOS 7.0.6

The easiest way to download iOS 7.0.6 is through the Over-The-Air update mechanism, accessible through the Settings app > Software Update. Choose “Download and Install” and agree to the terms and conditions to start the update process. Despite being a minor update, it can take a while to install as the ‘verifying update’ process lingers for a while on the home screen, before rebooting to the Apple logo where the actual firmware update occurs. Users can also choose to update through iTunes.

It is always advisable to back up iOS devices before updating system software, even with small releases like this.

iOS 7.0.6 IPSW Direct Download Links

Users who prefer to use .IPSW firmware files to update devices manually can choose to download the complete update directly from Apple’s servers using the links below:

In addition to iOS 7.0.6, Apple also released iOS 6.1.6, which includes the same security fix, for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4th generation devices that are not able to run iOS 7. The build number for iOS 6.1.6 is 10b500. An update to Apple TV, versioned as 6.0.2, is also available.

A more sizable update is expected to arrive in the coming weeks with the iOS 7.1 public release, which is currently in beta.

View Time Stamps for Messages on the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch osxdailynews.blogspot.com

osxdailynews.blogspot.com ® View Time Stamps for Messages on the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Messages The Messages app for iOS 7 now gives everyone the ability to see time stamps for any sent message or received message directly in the app. This lets you know exact times of correspondence when any message was sent or received, providing the precise hour and minute for each individual element of dialog. This is a handy trick that is easy to miss, but also just as easy to use once you know it’s there:

  • Open Messages app and go to any conversation with a contact

  • Tap and hold on a message and swipe left to view timestamps

View time stamps for messages

You have to continue to hold the swipe to view the time stamps on the right side of the messages display, letting go of the swipe hold will cause the messages to swing back and cover the timestamp again.

Yes, this also works for iMessages, MMS multimedia texts, in addition to standard SMS text messages. If it’s in the Messages app and you’re post-iOS 7, you’ll be able to view the timestamp whether or not the other recipient is running iOS at all. To see more than a small handful of message timestamps you will need to scroll around in the messages window to do so on the iPhone and iPod touch, while the iPad larger display obviously will show many more timestamps and messages simultaneously.

There is no obvious indicator this feature exists, so much like deleting messages if you aren’t told specifically how to do it you’d likely only find it by accident or by discovery.

Previously, you had to rely on the first message of a conversation which would have a timestamp visible before a message, and those would only exist when a significant time had passed between messages being sent and received. The start time including the start date of any messaging conversation still exists at the top of a particular conversation, but now you can get much more precise information with the individual timestamps, making this a great feature inclusion.

On a related note, don’t forget to adjust Messages to show the full contacts name to avoid any confusion when in conversations.

iOS 7 logo Apple has released iOS 7 into the wild. As you likely know by now, it offers a significant visual overhaul to the entire mobile experience, and also includes quite a few new features.

Devices compatible with iOS 7 include: iPad 2, iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPod touch 5th gen, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 5C. Despite the official supported hardware list, we still recommend that older model iPad and iPhone users hold off on updating until a point release resolves some of the ongoing performance issues. Of course, you don’t have to take that advice, and you can find the iOS 7 update right now through iTunes or on your iOS device itself with Over-the-Air update.

Update to iOS 7 Right Now with OTA

The simplest way to update to iOS 7 is with Over-The-Air updates on the device itself.

  • Open Settings, go to “General”, then go to “Software Update”

iOS 7 Update available now through OTA download

If OTA isn’t working for you, you can also find the update in iTunes. Another option is to update manually with IPSW, which will require you to download iOS 7 firmware from these links first.

Resolving “Cannot Install Because it Requires More Storage”

Do note that installing the iOS 7 update through OTA requires over 3.1GB of space initially, despite the download being much smaller than that. That is so the update can unpack and install on the device – it does not take up 3.1GB of space when completed. Basically that means you will need at least 3GB of space available on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch before it will install.

You’ll know this is an issue because the OTA update will tell you “This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 3.1GB of storage.” This is by far the most frequently encountered error for users attempting to install the iOS 7 update on their devices right now, and the easiest solutions to clear up a lot of storage space quickly are the following:

Update cannot be installed because of storage

You can also install the update through iTunes, though you will need to get iTunes 11.1 first so that you can sync the device afterwards.

If you’re waiting until later to perform the update, don’t forget to follow our thorough preparation guide. At the very least, back up before beginning your 7.0 update!

Prepare for iOS 7 the Right Way: What To Do Before Upgrading an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to iOS 7 osxdailynews.blogspot.com

Written By Unknown; About: Prepare for iOS 7 the Right Way: What To Do Before Upgrading an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to iOS 7 osxdailynews.blogspot.com on Senin, 16 September 2013

osxdailynews.blogspot.com ® Prepare for iOS 7 the Right Way: What To Do Before Upgrading an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to iOS 7

iOS 7 is set for public release on the 18th, making now a good time to start preparing for the major iOS update on any iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. But before jumping ahead with the 7.0 upgrade, you should check on compatibility and do some simple cleanup and backups with your iOS devices… so here are seven steps to prepare for iOS 7 the right way.

Upgrading to iOS 7 the right way

1: Check Device Compatibility

The list of supported hardware hasn’t changed since the first beta build, so make sure your device is even on the list before anything else. To refresh, iOS 7 is compatible with the following devices:

  • iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s

  • iPod touch 5th gen

  • iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad mini

iOS 7 supported device list

A quick word of caution… just because older iPhone and iPad models are on that list does not mean they should be updated. This is somewhat controversial advice, but based upon plenty of experience with major iOS updates, the older models may want to avoid the update entirely – at least until a point release (say, 7.0.1 or 7.1) comes later to potentially resolve some inevitable speed and performance issues. This may or may not apply to iOS 7, but it’s something to take into consideration.

2: Running an iOS Beta? Downgrade or go to GM

Many people are running iOS 7 beta software (officially and unofficially), and many of those users are also unaware that these betas have an expiration date. When the device expires, it basically becomes useless and must be downgraded or updated to a newer version to be usable again. Don’t get caught with a temporarily bricked device, take the time to leave the beta and downgrade back to iOS 6 while you can, or update to the final GM build.

You won’t find the iOS 7 GM as an over-the-air update from the beta releases, thus developers need to use the dev center to download the GM, which can be done build right now. Note that users on iOS 6 will find the iOS 7 release as an Over-the-Air update starting on September 18.

3: Clean Up Your App Collection

It’s certainly not necessary, but it’s always a good idea to do some app cleanup between major iOS updates. There isn’t much to this, just poke around your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and look for apps you don’t use often, or don’t need, then delete them.

There is no harm in deleting apps because you can always download them again later without having to pay for them again, they are all stored in the “Purchased” section of your Apple ID account history and accessible through the App Store.

Delete apps you don't use

4: Perform Advanced Maintenance & Cleaning

Moving beyond apps, major iOS updates provide a good opportunity for some more advanced maintenance and device cleaning, which can help to free up space on just about any iPad or iPhone. This typically focuses on two areas; temporary and cache files, and the ever-annoying “Other” space which is greatly misunderstood. We’ve covered both of these before in detail:

Done together, you can often free up anywhere from 500MB to as much as 5GB of space. Not bad for a few minutes work, huh?

5: Copy Your Photos & Movies to a Computer

Many of us rely on our iPhones (or even iPads) as our primary camera these days, which means they are full of memories and moments that you don’t want to lose. But iCloud’s Photo Stream is still misunderstood by many people and won’t keep all your pictures anyway, so the best thing to do is to periodically copy them all over from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer. Whether you have a Mac or Windows PC, transferring them from iOS to a computer is easy. An alternative that doesn’t require a computer at all is to back them up to a service like DropBox or another third party cloud storage provider.

6: Back Up to Both iTunes & iCloud

We recommend the dual backup approach because it’s pretty much foolproof, leaving you with both local iTunes based and iCloud based options if you need to restore the device for whatever reason. Backing up is easy as always and the same across any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

  • With iTunes: Connect the device to the computer, select it in iTunes, and choose “Back Up Now”

  • With iCloud: Open Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now

Always back up your devices before installing any system update. This is particularly important for major iOS updates like iOS 7.

7: Update & Install iOS 7

You’re ready to go with iOS 7! Installation and upgrading will be simple through OTA as usual, widely available on the 18th in just a few short days. On the other hand, if you’re a developer you can get the GM now from Apple, and the unusually impatient can take another route with a clean install right now too – but it’s really not recommended. Whatever you do, enjoy iOS 7, it’s a pretty great update!
